Topaz is November’s traditional birthstone. I have been drooling all over my stash of Imperial topaz (named so because ownership was restricted to the Russian czars). Here are a few things hot off my bench – don’t worry, they’ve been sanitized!

Did you know that topaz has perfect cleavage? Wanna know what “perfect cleavage looks like?

Orthorhombic Crystal Structure aka Perfect Cleavage

Orthorhombic Crystal aka Perfect Cleavage

Orthorhombic
In this system all the crystals have three axes which are mutually perpendicular and are all of different lengths.
Though topaz is moderately hard, it has one perfect cleavage, which means it can be easily split. Is this fascinating or what?

If you’re disappointed that THIS is what I meant by “perfect cleavage”, allow me to titillate you with a Sophia Loren story featuring some serious cleavage. Remember that iconic photo of Ms. Loren looking enviously at Jayne Mansfield’s decolletage? Earlier today this was one of the headlines I came across while surfing the interweb:

Sophia Loren admits she was afraid Jayne Mansfield’s dress was ‘going to blow’ in infamous photo.

Wanna see what was really going on at that party? Check out these rare photos (click on the pic to see the rest of the story):
